Spring 2024
One Room Challenge:
(not so) Formal Living Room
Hello friends! Welcome to Week 1 of the Spring 2024 One Room Challenge! I've been thinking about this challenge for a while now and the stars have finally aligned this year! It will be my first ORC, but I'm sure it won't be my last.
My husband and I bought our 1965 suburban side-split in Overland Park, Kansas a couple of years ago after moving back to the area from Houston. We were looking for a modest, mid-sized home in a quiet, established neighborhood that had good bones but needed some love. After many months of home tours and offers, we finally found the one for us.
For the past two years we've been living in the house as it was when we bought it without changing ANYTHING! Every room in the house needs a bit of something, with a major kitchen and minor bathroom renovations down the line. However, for now, we decided to tackle the relatively simple living room redo.

My Approach to Design
In a previous post, I talked about ways to refresh your space for the new year. I mentioned that when a potential client says that his/her space is uninspiring, it's often one of these 3 culprits: a dysfunctional layout, non-existent window treatments, or a rug that is doing the room no favors. In this case, it's all three!Living Room Goals
Over the years, we've collected a few vintage pieces that we will be incorporating into the space. We both like mid-century design, while my personal style is a rotating smorgasbord of modern classic, maximalism, and traditional.
We want the room to feel casual enough for overflow when we have family and friends over to celebrate the big game (Go Chiefs!), but also stylish and comfortable for hosting after-dinner drinks.
Things to consider...
How will we use the space on the daily?
What is the best use of furnishings and decor to give the room a fresh perspective while honoring the bones of the home?
The Mandate
Create a bold, stylish, but still casual, living space to comfortably host family and friends by combining new, custom furnishings and treasured, collected pieces with our love of art.
In next week's post, I will be sharing my inspiration and design plan! I hope you will follow along! And don't forget to check out what other OCR participants are up to here on the OCR Blog.
My current clients would absolutely die over your MCM collection! This is going to be a fabulous transformation with a lot of style, I can just tell from what you are beginning with!
Thanks Julie! I’ll be following your makeover too. I can’t wait to see the final product. 🙂
